Spring Fishing is Upon Us

Spring Fishing is Upon Us

With the ice finally starting to disappear along the Lake Huron coastline, it’s time to start thinking of Spring fishing. While it may not be the most comfortable fishing with cold weather and rough water, it’s typically one of the most productive times of the year when you can get out. Early May, the Harbor Beach Can2Can tournament is held. This event is rapidly becoming one of the premier tournaments in Michigan. Last year’s winning boat took a cash prize of $8700. Check out the tournament website here for more details. There are some great videos on the website. You can go directly to the videos here.

Another favorite spring fishing event is the Lake Huron Fisheries report. This year you’ll have to travel to Bay City on April 30th for this 3 hour presentation on the state of the fishery of Lake Huron. Many reports by DNR management and marine biologist report on the health of the lake for the entire food chain. Upcoming fish management plans are also presented. There is always a Q&A session so you can get an opportunity to express you opinion to the “guys in charge”. More info is available here.

Last year was one of the best fishing in a long time. The Steelhead and Lake Trout were plentiful and Walleye catches were good during the summer months and into the fall. Let’s hope things continue to improve.
